BTW I will NEVER say a product is great, super or even acceptable if it isn't, whether I got it free or NOT!

Books I have authored.

Many times I receive books for FREE to give them an honest review. I do not get paid to give a good or bad review. Spotlights are promotional and should be regarded as advertising for the book spotlighted. Regardless of where or how I got a book, my review will be as honest as I can make it.

A Barricade in Hell by Jamie Lee Moyer

This book is set in San Francisco in 1916 time frame, shortly before the US entered WW1.   A evangelical peace protestor is involved in occult occurrences and possibly serial murders.  Super natural aspects impact the police investigation which is impacted by ghosts.

Isadora Bobet and Delia Martin return as the resident ghost busters while Captain Gabe and Lt. Jack are the law enforcement personnel of choice.   The plot includes Chinese Tongs, sorcery, demons, spies, espionage, treason, treachery and murder.  If that isn't enough there is also a feisty kitten.

The setting is post San Francisco earthquake and that somber experience carries through the book.   The exuberance of the time period is also featured.   The author does a superb job in painting the time period.

This mystery like Delia's Shadow was well crafted with plenty of twists and turns.  I enjoyed it as much as the first book.

I highly recommend the book.

Seal Team Six: Hunt the Wolf by Don Mann

This is an action-adventure written by an actual Seal Team 6 member. There's a (so far) four book series starting Thomas Crocker a SEAL Team six team member. This volume takes place all over the mid-east and focuses on terrorism and human trafficking.  The first one I reviewed,  Hunt the Scorpion takes place primarily in Libya.

Thomas Crocker is introduced in this volume.  He seems like a normal guy who mis-spent his youth being a "bad" boy.  Crocker credits the Navy and the Seal program with turning his life around and making him a man.

This book was hard to read when dealing with the human trafficking.  It is hard to believe that there are people who actually stoop so low.   " Human trafficking represents an estimated $31.6 billion of international trade per annum in 2010.[9] Human trafficking is thought to be one of the fastest-growing activities of transnational criminal organizations." (Wikipedia)  Crocker deals out the appropriate justice for the despicable thugs who indulge in slavery.

The terrorism threat could be pulled from any recent newspaper and thus seemed all together too real.

As in  Hunt the Scorpion there is plenty of action for any adrenaline junkie.  Crocker and his men are on a dual search for terrorists and a Norwegian teen.

I enjoyed the book and recommend it.

No Website that I found but a good Time Magazine Article about Don Mann.

Abandon by Blake Crouch

Indiana Jones meet Stephen King.  The author clearly demonstrates that human emotions are far more frightening than paranormal activities.   Abandon, a lost mining community and missing population and modern treasure hunters combine in this eye opening mystery.

An estranged father and daughter,  some paranormal ghost busters and greed driven desperados travel to Abandon, each seeking something they think they lost.

Crouch shows humanities basic instincts haven't changed from 1893 to the present.

The author does a terrific job in creating both the environment and the climate for this book.  The interaction between the different groups and the motivation also provides an interesting twist to the story.  About the time you think you have the  plot figure out the author throws in another twist and makes you rethink your whole theory.

Excellent book which I highly recommend.

The Flame Keepers J. Gregory Smith

J. Gregory Smith is going to be a smashing success!  This phrase was in one of my earlier reviews of Greg's books.  I have revised my opinion.  Greg is a smashing success and Flame Keepers certainly shows it.   The plot is pulled off of the front pages and the potential for domestic terrorists.   The story clearly shows that the profit incentive is a major incentive to terrorism.  Sadly I concur and have to wonder what the breakdown is between narco terrorism and oil terrorism.  Perhaps that is my cynical side but regardless of my agreement, this book provides a reasonably plausible domestic terrorism tale.

Mr. Smith provides us with a new protagonist, Lukasz Gardocki, in this fresh action adventure.   Lukasz is a retired SEAL who is somewhat bored.   A voice from a dead team member changes that with overwhelming rapidity.

Lukasz goes from mothballing luxury yachts to undercover operative in mere days.   He claims it is due to a debt he owes to a dead friend but part of his motivation is his overwhelming boredom with his current life.

A psychotic messiah, bikers and misanthropes mixed with idealistic and naive societal outcasts provide a wide range of characters for the book.

For the romantics Alecia brings a love interest to round out a very convincing plot.

Oddly one of the settings is a former missile silo and I had just researched mothballed government installations from the cold war.  You can buy a decommissioned missile silo if you have the bucks.  So ending with a sobering thought of miscreants holed up in a decommissioned, impregnable government facility I highly recommend this book!

Past reviews of J. Gregory Smith books:
I enjoyed all of them but this book was even better.
BTW when shopping in a hardware store the other day I saw a box marked Flame Keepers and got quick chill down my back.   In this case it turned out to be a type of Tiki Light for outdoor events but it shows the power of this story.

Jack's Diabetes

Diabetes is not just a word to 12-year-old Jack.   It has changed the way he lives his life.   Jack has learned not to just cope with a disease but he can live his life the way he wants while successfully treating his diabetes.

This book’s goal is to help children realize that although the onset of diabetes can be frightening it does not mean the cessation of normal life.  This book provides a story that helps both the youthful diabetic and their peers to understand the impact of diabetes and one method of therapy.  It is not a recommendation for that therapy and all medical decisions should be discussed with your physician.
