Downfall by Mark Rubinstein

This mystery has as an aside a sad commentary on the medical field.   Rick Shepard is an Internist in a high-pressure

NYC medical practice.  His father, also a doctor, is a dying breed that still makes house calls.  Rick’s father is murdered which starts the events of the story.

Rubinstein is able to sandwich in a mini-romance with two emotionally wounded detectives as well as noting the sad state of medical practice factories.   The mystery was good as it was certainly not obvious who did the killing.

The anguish Rick went through was well portrayed.   Jackie could have had more depth but overall the characters were well portrayed.

I enjoyed the book and recommend it.

Great Nanny Doesn't Remember Me by William G. Bentrim

Dementia is a frightening thing to adults so it is hardly surprising that it’s frightening to children. Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Memory loss is an example.

Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia. It may be on a sliding scale of total confusion to just occasional memory lapses. All dementia is not Alzheimer's disease and many people show moderate memory loss without ever being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This book is not an attempt to define the disease or to suggest a cure or treatment.

The goal of this book is to provide a simplistic explanation of general dementia to a primary-age child. Kids are amazingly resilient if they are provided with explanations for confusing things in their lives. My hope is this book will provide children a modicum of illumination on a confusing issue.

If you like the book a review on Amazon, Goodreads or Barnes and Noble would be great!

Key West Dead by Mark Nolan

Jake Wolfe and more than a close friend Sarah, are guests at a Key West Wedding.  Things deteriorate from there.   An IED perpetrator with a grudge targets boats and since Jake basically lives on a boat, he and Cody, the wonder dog, get involved.

Grinds, Jake’s former Lt. and Grinds wife are also back.   Most of the rest of the characters are mostly retired Marine friends of Jake and Terrel.

Nolan is a fan of Old Testament justice which is hard to argue considering the number of crazies currently in the news.  Jake is complex with his PTSD and his vast reservoir of protectiveness for pretty much anyone who needs protection.

I’ve read all of the Jake Wolfe books and have enjoyed each and every one of them including this one.   Nolan writes a good adventure story with enough complexity to maintain your interest.

I recommend the book and the series.

The Hollow F.K. Marlowe

This was an interesting little short story.  Jo’s walk in the woods brings back memories of Pet Cemetery.  When her father who is suffering from some sort of dementia, says in Welsh to beware, she doesn’t know what to beware of.

The story has detailed descriptions of the environment and feelings.   Jo alludes to a troubled childhood and mystery.  The story left me wanting more, too many unanswered questions abound.

Marlowe has great descriptive talents and I would hope this would be part of a much larger tome sometime in the future.
