The Keepers by Jeffrey B. Burton

The Keepers by Jeffrey B. Burton

If you are a dog person you will love this book but be aware that there may be things that will give you issues.   Mason Reid and the kids are back.   The kids being a Golden Retriever, two Collies, a German Shepard, and a bloodhound pup.   Mason is a human remains detection specialist or the parent of the human remains detecting pooches.  The team gets caught up in Chicago corruption.

The author depicts extraordinary talents in the dogs.  He also clearly shows the level of commitment that dogs give to their human parents.  Love, loyalty, and bravery are not strictly human traits.  The dogs show those traits in spades.   Mason is still yearning Kippy.

This was an excellent second book and it did justice to the dogs and human characters.

I really enjoyed the book and recommend it.

Thief of Souls by Brian Klingborg

This was an essay on modern Chinese society with a side order of mystery. Brother Lu is a Chinese detective in a small, rural Chinese community.   A  local girl is murdered and an obvious suspect is arrested.  The story indicates that the path of least resistance is often taken by Chinese police.   Lu is not willing to assume the obvious suspect is guilty.

The descriptions of modern Chinese society were as interesting as the plot.  Things like rice paper windows in the dead of winter or the ubiquitous nature of cigarette smoking were intriguing.  The interplay between characters was also eye-opening and would often have ended in litigation in this country.   The plot was intricate and not overly solvable until near the end.

I enjoyed the story.

The Ruthless by David Putnam

This is a Bruno Johnson novel.   Bruno is a LA County Deputy Sherriff.   The plot of this story is Bruno is involved in an undercover sting operation while simultaneously trying to find out who murdered his daughter and grandson.

There is plenty of action and Bruno has no hesitancy in dishing it out.   This is a character that carries a load of pain and guilt bowed nearly over with it.   He lashes out and pushes away anyone who might help him.

The book was a good read, I recommend it.

The Wild One by Nick Petrie

Peter Ash’s PTSD is becoming more of a focus in the books.  His soul mate, June, and his best bud are not in the picture.  He faces this crisis alone, in Iceland and the cold trying to rescue Oskar, a precocious boy.

Peter discovers that Icelanders are insular and family-oriented.  He discovers this in his usual manner, the hard way.   A ruthless politician will stop at nothing to find the boy before Peter can.  There is a wealth of violence and introspection.

I enjoyed the book.

Tear It Down by Nick Petrie

Peter Ash fuels his helping nature with the white static which is derived from PTSD.   June, his strong-willed lover, sends him to Memphis to help where old friend, Wanda.  The plot includes the Civil War, white supremacist, racism, dope dealing, gangsters, and musicians.

Racism is a subplot to the book.  The white supremacists are a bit simplistic.   The does seem to be an argument that the prison system is contributing to racism.   The plot was fast-paced and bursting with action.  Peter’s white static seemed less debilitating and more motivating in this book.   The historic aspect was intriguing.   Eli was a little more complex than expected.

I enjoyed the action and the retribution.

Kiku's Quest Kindle Version FREE at Amazon on April 7,2021

I finally finished my novel.  The only good thing I found about the pandemic is I had the time to sit down and type the 90K+ words to finish the book.

I’ve read Sci-Fi since I could read.  I wrote my first Sci-Fi short story on a tiny portable typewriter I won for selling greeting cards. The thousands of books I have read have primed me to write this one.   It took me ten years of perseverance to get the darn thing done.  I can only hope that Volume II won’t take as long.   With the pace of technology, if I take too long it will be science fact and not fiction.

Kiku is a recessive gen-engineered warrior living on the tough streets of a fringe planet barely out of restricted status. Unbeknownst to Kiku is the wealth of abilities lying within her, waiting for the right trigger to bring her potential to full bloom. Gen-engineered warriors are long forgotten, banned remnants of a galactic-wide dictatorship long since defunct. Kiku’s quest is hardly noble; her quest is mere survival! Little does she know that her survival imperils the entrenched profiteers raping her planet. Little do the tyrannical profiteers know the tiger their persecution is about to unleash!

Light It Up by Nick Petrie

The legalization of marijuana by a state does not make it legal on the federal level.  Due to that conflict, the money generated by the sales becomes a source of conflict.  Banks won’t take it and buckets of cash can lead to trouble.  Regardless of the book’s plot, with increased legalization by the states, there needs to be some method for the sellers to protect their proceeds.  Peter Ash makes a new friend and that leads to a wealth of mayhem.

The action is typical Petrie.  The attorney was amusing and highly unprofessional. June and Lewis uphold their respective roles.

Good action and adventure.
