Deadly Tides by Mary Keliikoa

Jax lost a child and hasn’t recovered.  Abbey, Jax’s wife, hasn’t recovered either and the two join the ranks of parents who divorce after the loss of a child.  Abbey is FBI and Jax is a Misty Pines sheriff.  A missing surf shop owner and jealousy bring the two together in a manner that may heal their wounds or irrevocably drive them apart.

Kerliikoa has crafted believable characters with credible grief.  Insecurity lies just under the surface in many apparently confident people. The walk in their moccasin’s adage is accurate.   It is impossible to know what internal crisis motivates behavior.  Can loss provoke unthinkable behavior in heretofore law-abiding reasonable people?

The book had abundant action, subtle treachery, rampant insecurity, and a suitably complex plot.

I recommend it.

Tides of Fire by James Rollins

The Sigman Force is witness to the potential end of the world.   Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that seem to originate in the Tonga Trench are portending catastrophic results.  The Chinese are deeply involved and an old enemy shows up.

Rollins does an excellent job maintaining a high level of anxiety while providing non-stop action.  His afterword answers many of the questions that arose while reading the book.

This book was both entertaining and enlightening.  I highly recommend it.

Spotlight on Saving Myles by Carl Vonderau

When the FBI can’t help, an unassuming banker takes matters into his own hands to bring his son home.

Wade, a respected banker in La Jolla, CA, and his estranged wife, Fiona, make the unbearable decision to send their teenage son, Myles, away to an expensive treatment center after a streak of harmful behavior. After a year of treatment, Myles comes home, seemingly rehabilitated. But soon, he sneaks off to Tijuana to buy drugs—and is kidnapped.

When the ransom call comes, Fiona is frantic and accepts help from Andre, the Quebecois whose charity Fiona runs. Wade is wary of Andre’s reputation and the bank he owns, but seeing no other way to secure a kidnap negotiator or the ransom, he swallows his doubts to get his son home.

In order to get the ransom money, Wade makes a deal with Andre—he’ll work for Andre’s bank in exchange for the cash. But as Wade races to rescue Myles before his kidnappers lose their patience, he realizes he’s wrapped up in more crime than just a kidnapping—he’s now indebted to a cartel.

Missed Cue by Lynn Slaughter

Lieutenant Caitlin O’Connor is a mess, professionally and personally.  A high-profile murder is driving her crazy.   Her obsession with a married man is driving her insane.  Her partner's spiral is leaving her deranged. Overall in technical terms she is a hot mess.

Solving the murder means gathering her collective self, personal and professional, and turning things around.

The plot was intricate.  The emotional instability of Caitlin made ME crazy.  Her inability to pull it together was like fingernails on a blackboard for anyone old enough to remember blackboards.

I liked the believability of the characters.

I enjoyed the book.

August is Psoriasis Month, FREE Kindle Version of Joey's Psoriasis August 11-15, 2023

As you may have noticed, I often promote my own books here, not just those I’ve read.   August is Psoriasis Awareness Month.  My book addressing this issue is Joey’s Psoriasis.  The impetus for writing this book was provided by my dermatologist.   As I was going through an examination she informed me that 50% of the kids diagnosed with psoriasis are also diagnosed with depression.   Knowing I am an author of children’s books, she flat-out told me I needed to write a book on psoriasis.   After researching and writing, she approved what I had written.  The result is Joey’s Psoriasis.

August is the month many kids return to school.  My book illustrates how demoralizing it can be to a child when they are ostracized due to a medical condition.  It points out that psoriasis is NOT contagious.  I hope that I can get that message out to as many kids as possible before they head back to school.

To facilitate that awareness:

Spotlight on Missed Cue by Lynn Slaughter

LOUISVILLE, KY – The curtain rises on a  new murder mystery from award-winning author of Deadly Setup and Leisha’s Song. Lynn Slaughter’s Missed Cue (Aug 8, 2023, Melange Books) finds Lieutenant Cailtin O’Connor in a theatrical mess when a prima ballerina fails to awaken during the final act of Romeo and Juliet. With multiple suspects, infidelity, and a twisted plot of romantic entanglements while also dealing with Caitlin’s personal love life, Missed Cue is a fast-paced Agatha Christie-style mystery that twists and turns to the final act.

Winner of multiple awards including the Silver Falchion Book Award, Moonbeam Children’s Book Award, Imadjinn Award and recognized by the Agatha Christie awards and the CIBA awards, Slaughter is no stranger to creating captivating narratives shrouded in mystery. Now she takes her expertise in young adult writing reaching a new audience with her first mystery novel for adults.

When star ballerina Lydia Miseau misses her cue during a performance, Lieutenant Caitlin O’Connor encounters the most complicated case of her career. The autopsy reveals no clear cause of death, so Caitlin must not only figure out who killed the ballerina, but how the killer did it. Her investigation uncovers an intricate web of betrayal, infidelity, and revenge. When the medical examination reveals that Lydia was a few weeks pregnant with a child who could not have been her husband’s, Caitlin discovers painful parallels between Lydia’s life and her own illicit involvement with a married man.

For fans of Lori Robbins’ “On Pointe” Mystery Series and Girl Most Likely by Max Allan Collins, readers will love spinning through Caitlin’s thrilling mystery as she seeks the true murderer and the truth about her own illicit romance.

Deadly Depths by John F. Dobbyn

Today, August 1, 2023 is the book's release.

This is a mystery with lost treasure, pirates, murder, sharks, secret societies, Maroons, Corsican thugs, Aztecs, and archeologists.   Matt Shane’s pseudo-father is found dead of an apparent suicide.   Matt doesn’t accept that his friend would commit suicide, and there the mystery begins.

Matt discovers that Professor Holmes was a member of a secret group on a quest.  The quest led the group to Jamaica where death starts tracking the group.

The author’s description of Captain Morgan’s trek across Panama, resonated with me as I’m intimately familiar with the rugged geography and the dangers of that area.

Dobbyn successfully tied a wealth of topics and locations together into an action-laden tale that was a delight to read.  I recommend the book.
