Growing Old Explained by William G. Bentrim

Growing old is better than the alternative. Overall, we have an aging population which means that children frequently have great-grandparents as well as grandparents. Kids are curious and this book attempts to explain some of the factors of aging. Most importantly it points out to children that it is important to accept the elderly with their frailties. Understanding those factors that are part of aging enables kids to better relate to their elders.

If you like the book a review on Amazon, Goodreads or Barnes and Noble would be great!

The Last Lion of Karkov by Dale Griffin

This could be described as a romance novel.  I’m not sure that is a correct description but it is the first that comes to mind.  It took nearly 200 pages for me to finally fall in love with the book.  So I guess that love, means it was a romance novel.  There is action and mayhem but the relationships between the characters are the supporting pillars of the book.

Jillian and Natalie are the daughters of a tyrant, the Lion of Karkov.  The Lion raises the girls to be warriors, heartless warriors.  He succeeds in teaching them to be warriors but fails to make them heartless.  The love they have for each other opens them to emotions that the Lion despises.

The story centers around the desire for the Lion to have a male heir and his plans to see his daughters provide him with one.

Old scars from the Lion’s previous wars ends up plaguing the daughters but also to succor them.  Love is found in the strangest of places and so once again, this is a love story.

Early on I would have given a hearty laugh if asked if I enjoyed this book, surprising to myself, I ended up “loving” the book and I strongly recommend it.

Just One Look by Harlan Coben

Coben delights in popping the clutch and shooting to 60mph in 3.4 seconds.   This book put the pedal to the metal from the preface.   A tragedy at a rock concert fifteen years ago leads to the interaction of perpetrators and victims years later.

Coben likes to populate his books with colorful characters.  Cram, crooked teeth, deadly and relates well to children.    Eric Wu is straight out of a Bond movie sans the bowler.  Grace defines perseverance in the love of her husband. A mafioso, a Fed, a local police Captain, a hot mama, and those with flexible identities fill out the cast.

I enjoyed the book and recommend it.

Solomon's Crown by Natasha Siegel

King Richard and King Phillip, historical characters, are the lead protagonists in this story.   The ascension of Richard to kingship and the friction with his siblings is the subplot.

I’m not fond of romantic literature regardless of who is involved. I was not fond of this book despite the author’s sometimes scintillating characterizations.

If you are fond of pseudo-historic romances you may enjoy this book, I am not so I really didn’t care for it despite my fondness for historical novels.

The Cabinet of Dr. Leng by Douglas Preston; Lincoln Child

 T
his is a continuation of some past books.  It leaves you hanging. Personally, I would wait for the sequel so I could read it all at once.   Constance leaves Pendergast for her own reasons.   Pendergast is distraught and avails himself of his favorite NYC detective to help him with Constance.   As a sidebar, there is a case of missing native American artifacts from the museum.

I enjoyed the story.  The plot is complex and needs several books to play out.

These two authors take you to some surprising places.

Retribution by Robert McCaw

This is another Koa Kane Hawaiian mystery.   Koa is the chief of detectives and finds mysterious assaults on his peers.   There seems to be no pattern to the violence until it suddenly becomes clear who is the main target in the crosshairs.

McCaw does a nice job with a complex plot.   Koa is not a flawless hero but one who struggles with his own dark, dirty secret.   Guilt rears it’s ugly head at the least convenient moment.

Office politics go disturbing violent and Koa is pressed to find answers before anyone else dies.

I like this series and the Hawaiian history that it incorporates.

I recommend this book and his others, reviews of which can be found on Pick of the Literate at https://bookrevues.blogspot.com/

Deadly Weapon by Mark Nolan

Jake Wolfe is back and once again in the midst of a wealth of action filled turmoil.
Jake still suffers from episodes of PTSD as does his sidekick, and brains of the operation, Sgt. Cody, K9. The plot involves a secret group of wealthy nutjobs who plan on weaponizing the 1918 influenza virus and ridding the world of any opposition.

As all of Nolan’s books, you need to keep a firm grip on your knickers as he love hot action and available women.   In most cases the hot action involves an assortment of weapons but on some cases it involves pole dancing which certainly qualifies as hot.

I enjoy Nolan’s books and recommend them for terrific recreational reading.
