Paka Mdogo Little Cat by H.S. Toshack

This is an adventure story.  It is a safari adventure by Sheena, a little black and white cat. The story is told from the cat’s perspective and consequently is a bit innovative for an adventure story.  Sheena has lost her family and must find them, and most
importantly she must save them from a grumpy old lion.

I enjoyed the encounters that Sheena has with other animals.  The descriptions of the conversations with the animals, such as the way Twiga walks.  The author does a great job having different animals describe themselves or Sheena describing them in her perspective.

You don’t have to love cats to love this book.  It is an adventure book, just one experienced and described by a cat.

I recommend the book, it will be going to one of my granddaughters.

Nash Falls by David Baldacci

Nash Falls by David Baldacci

Walter Nash is a consummate financier.   His uncanny ability to recognize the rare nugget in the vast pan of businesses has led to his vaunted position in one of the world’s financial giants.  Walter’s position brings him to the attention of the FBI whose interest is less than welcome.   Money laundering and murder are leavened with moral depravity. A tall man, Walter finds himself over his head.

Walter, who is socially awkward, finds his quirkiness is overlooked due to his ability to turn sow’s ears into silk purses. The social awkward part does impact his family life where he finds himself at arm’s length with those he loves.   Walter and his father are wholly alienated. Ty, Walter’s father, was a kick butt person with Vietnam baggage.  Shock, Ty’s best friend, becomes a part of Walter’s life, much to Walter’s dismay.

In essence, the story is that of a phoenix that must die to be reborn.  Walter must face trials radically different than the rarified business transactions in which he excels.

I loved the book and highly recommend it.

Asylum Murders by Michael G. Colburn

Lady Edith Black is back. Edie is now in Australia with her beloved Benji, who is less than a bit player in this story. Multiple storylines include the Sargent at Arms’ mace being stolen, an old friend, Britina, being put in a precarious position, an old villain, Henderson, returning, as well as a mysterious Dr. Snow.  There are medical experiments, corpse robbing, grand theft, and murder to spice things up.

Edie has not changed in personality.  She still ignores authority when it is inconvenient. She has cultivated an ally in Chief Inspector McElroy, who holds her in both esteem and trepidation.  An American Doctor Tharp, gets involved with enthusiasm. There is plenty of action, featuring a variety of villains. Of course, with homage to the book title, there is a disturbing asylum stocked with corpse-loving nurses.

 I enjoyed the book.

 I recommend it.

Stolen Brilliance by Michael G. Colburn

Lady Edith Black wasn’t always a lady. Growing up in an East London slum in 1890, she was far more experienced than her age would suggest.   Edie learned very early that survival was paramount, all else could follow.  Benji, a very early friend, helped Edie become Lady Edith Black, a personage whose goal was to help others.

Getting to that point in her life involved many harrowing escapes as well as a wealth of nefarious characters.   Edie discovered a well-tied cravat could be just as criminal as a cap full of razor blades.  The story ranges from London to Australia with many interim stops for both legitimate and stolen cargo.

A tenacious American insurance investigator, an assortment of good fellows, both legitimate and criminal flesh out the book. Colorful characters such as Trunk, abound.

I enjoyed the book and have already started the sequel, Asylum Murders.

 I recommend it.
